Vascular Ultrasound Q & A

What is vascular ultrasound?

Vascular ultrasound, also known as duplex ultrasound, uses sound waves to create images of blood vessels and measure blood flow.

It helps detect narrowed arteries, blood clots, and other vascular abnormalities without radiation.

Who needs vascular ultrasound?

You may need vascular ultrasound if you have leg pain when walking, swelling, suspected blood clots, carotid artery disease risk, or other circulation concerns.

It may also be used to monitor known vascular disease.

What happens during the test?

The test is painless and typically takes 30–60 minutes. A technician moves a handheld probe over the skin to capture images and blood flow measurements.

What happens after vascular ultrasound?

There is no recovery time required. Dr. Farah reviews the results and discusses appropriate next steps if treatment is needed.
